Colinda Hunter, the new owner of LIVE WELL Exercise Clinic Calgary - Southwood is thrilled to bring the LIVE WELL franchise to Alberta. Here’s a little Q&A:

Why LIVE WELL?

I am a Registered Dietitian and have been practising for over 25 years. I have worked in many different areas of nutrition including private practice, consulting, medical nutrition sales, agriculture and higher education. My deep passion is health promotion and chronic disease prevention, teaching others about food and nutrition, and translating science into nutrition communications and resources. I began my career with a degree in physical education and a love of sport and exercise, and became very interested in how healthy eating and physical activity contribute to health and longevity! This new venture with LIVE WELL has brought me full circle in my career!

Why a franchise?

My husband and I have wanted to have our own business for a long time. We started looking into franchise opportunities and decided to work with a broker who helped us identify our business goals and develop a business model, then matched us with opportunities that fit our model. We researched each one extensively and LIVE WELL was the best fit. We believed in the mission right from the start.

I felt a deep connection to LIVE WELL early on. Sara’s founder’s story resonated with me and the parallels to my life story. I chose a career in healthcare because I was passionate about nutrition and fitness and wanted to help others meet their health goals. But, I didn’t prioritize my health. Life got complicated, work was stressful and I struggled to stay active. My lifestyle became sedentary despite my love of sport and fitness. And then the vicious cycle began, my inactivity led to knee problems and then I didn’t want to exercise because of my knee problems. I knew the path I was on was dangerous, given my family history of heart disease and diabetes and that I needed to make a change if I wanted to be fit enough to enjoy the things I like to do, like golf and hiking. Part of owning and operating a LIVE WELL clinic is a commitment to myself to prioritize my own health and stay active. But my biggest purpose goes back to wanting to help others, especially those who have become inactive, or those wanting to prevent poor health. I want to help them become active and healthy again.

How do you LIVE WELL?

I prioritize my health. I eat well, exercise and get enough sleep! I take the dog for a walk early in the morning and exercise in the clinic 2-3 times a week. I also enjoy golfing and have recently taken up pickleball. Even when things are hectic, running a new business, I take some time to focus on me. I enjoy my work, but set boundaries for myself.

How do you Find the Joy?

I like to spend time with my family - pizza night, football games, movies, hiking, Survivor–and find joy in the small things like taking the dog to the park, sitting on the deck with a glass of wine, golfing, Sudoku puzzles, Costco shopping, and going for ice cream! Life is meant to be LIVED WELL!
