HOW THESE CALGARY LIVE WELL MEMBERS INSPIRE EACH OTHER
Sometimes, we need a little extra motivation to get moving. So, imagine looking across the room and having the best motivation you could possibly want: Your Own Mother! That’s what happens when Aisha sees her mother Mahira pushing herself in her workout!
“We motivate each other,” says LIVE WELL member Aisha, who attends bi-weekly sessions at LIVE WELL Southwood with her mother, Mahira. In the middle of the pandemic, the duo were looking for a supportive place to exercise; Aisha has had two surgeries and one heart transplant, so she wanted a safe and clean space, where the duo would feel comfortable and could also have their health closely supervised and monitored. Their search led them to LIVE WELL and both mom and daughter say it was one of the best decisions they made!
A CARING ENVIRONMENT
“We knew that LIVE WELL takes into account people’s health conditions, and is a safe and supportive space,” says Mahira. “We have found great benefits from exercising together under the supervision of a qualified trainer who considers our health from both the physical and mental health benefits.”
What they didn’t realize before starting was not only how great it would be to exercise together - but the kinship they would feel with the other participants at LIVE WELL. “We come two to three times a week, and see the same members. You get to know their stories and struggles and together you get to a place of success,” says Aisha. “You become a little family.” Her mom adds. “LIVE WELL is as much a social setting as an exercise program!”
THE IMPACT OF LIVE WELL
Both Mahira and Aisha have seen huge improvements since starting at LIVE WELL in 2021. There are many times they admittedly do not want to go - but the more they get the endorphin boost from exercise, the greater they feel “elated and ready to take on the day” says Mahira! Aisha pipes in: “My mom and I motivate each other, and I definitely notice my mood is boosted after I come in and see the other LIVE WELL patrons and the wonderful trainers.”
Aisha’s long-term rehabilitation from heart surgeries requires her to keep the heart strong through exercise; Mahira has noticed considerable strength gains, and her knees - which had been bothering her - are better able to handle the strain of daily life.
“We love being able to come to LIVE WELL and participate in a fun activity together, that focuses on our physical and mental health,” says Aisha.
Mahira and Aisha prove that stronger together is the best way forward!
